Watching a family grow up through your lens: What it’s like to photograph the same people year after year

This is Matt and Margaret. They live in Missouri, but every year or so they travel to the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area to vacay on the beach. Six years ago, when they were pregnant with their first child, Haven, they contacted me to see if I’d be cool with driving south to shoot some maternity pics during their stay. (Margaret and I met through a mutual friend from my days as a newspaper reporter in Sarasota.) Since St. Pete is at least two hours away from that stretch of the coast, we decided to meet halfway on sleepy Nokomis Beach in Venice, Florida.

A year later they returned – this time with Haven in tow.

Isn’t she perfect?

Here she is at six, still perfect.

And now she has a happy-go-lucky brother, who has the confidence to pull off suspenders and a bowtie.

BUT – my favorite accessory that comes to mind when I think of this family is a giant floppy hat. Margaret wore it the first time I photographed her pregnant. Now she brings it along to every session, so we can work it into a few shots.

Here’s baby Haven wearing it.

And six-year-old Haven wearing it.

Now her brother has a hat, but it’s a lot less floppy.
